His political journey began with the founding of the Christian Democratic Movement in 1990, leading to his election to the National Council of the Slovak Republic in 1992, where he served on the Foreign Affairs Committee and was part of Slovakia's delegation to the Council of Europe. Notably, Dr. Figeľ played a pivotal role as Chief Negotiator for Slovakia's accession to the European Union, and his expertise was further recognized when he was appointed European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture, and Youth from 2004 to 2009. His leadership extended to serving as Vice-President of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, First Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Transport, Construction, and Regional Development. In 2016, Dr. Figeľ was appointed as the first Special Envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion or belief outside the EU by the European Commission, a role he held until 2019. His academic credentials are equally noteworthy, with a PhD from St. Elisabeth University in Bratislava, and lectureships in International Relations at Trnava University. He has further enriched his academic engagements as a Fellow at Brigham Young University and as a Visiting Fellow at the Open University in the UK.
